The benefits of Fix+

And no it’s not just another setting spray, it does more than that! Sure it may just look like water in a fancy bottle and cost a lot of money, but trust me when I say it’s worth it.

MAC fixplusMAC Prep + Prime Fix+ is a multi-tasker. You can spray it on your face before foundation to hydrate your skin and prep it for primer or you can go straight to foundation. You can also spray it onto your foundation brush or sponge to help thin out your foundation when applying it to your face. It’s sold mainly as a setting spray, to help remove the ‘just powdered’ look to your face. Most importantly, or what I use it for the most is intensifying eyeshadows and bringing out their true colours.

MAC fixplus differenceAbove is a MAC eyeshadow called Amber Lights, they describe it as a “Golden peachy-brown with golden shimmer”. I purchased it on a whim years ago without swatching it first, which in my mind was a mistake as when it arrived I found it lacked pigment. However, you can see to the right of the picture once you spray Fix+ onto your brush it really brings out the true colour of the eyeshadow.

I own quite a few shadows that aren’t super pigmented, sometimes I love that and sometimes I want it to go WHAM in my face with pigment. Here’s where Fix+ saves the day 🙂

The final step

Awhile ago I did a blog post about setting sprays and now I’ve come to update it! I wholeheartedly believe in setting sprays and would never leave the house without using some. I recently purchased 2 new ones through my USA makeup haul and I adore them!

Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix. This really reminds me of MAC Fix+, which is an old favourite of mine. Not only is it good at setting my makeup and removing the ‘powderyness’ on my face, but it’s also great for spraying onto eyeshadow brushes to intensify the colour of the shadows. I use this on a daily basis and complete love it. My makeup usually lasts around 6-8 hours with maybe a small touch up of powder in my T-zone throughout the day. That’s mainly because I have uber sweat face and also work a physical labour job. I’m going to say it, I prefer it over Mac Fix+ so if you can find it then grab some!

USA setting spray

Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray. Oh. My. Gawd. If you need your makeup to look flawless and perfectly for up to 12 hours, then honestly use this. I used it on my wedding day and my makeup did not need ANY touching up throughout the day, minus my lipstick. I regret not purchasing the full sized bottle of this, but I will definitely be repurchasing this and spare bottles when the time comes. If you only own one setting spray in your life, make it this one. I cannot sing enough high praises about it and now understand why it has cult status in the beauty world. Did I mention it’s even safe for Vegans! It deserves 10 out of 5 stars, it honestly does.

What are your favourite setting sprays? Do you even use one?

The final step

Game, Set & Match

So I never really feel like I’ve finished putting my makeup on until I’ve set it with a spray. I really dislike the powdery look on my own skin, so I use setting sprays to rid myself of this.

australis makeup setting sprayWith my recent Priceline point voucher I purchased the Australis Make-Up Finishing Spritz. I feel I was cheated slightly, as I bought a dud bottle. It squirts my face rather than mists nicely, the first time I used it I squirted myself in the eye. Not a great start 😛

I love the smell of rose and aloe, it’s very soothing and refreshing. Yet I feel I wasted my point voucher on this spray, it doesn’t do much for me! By halfway through the day the oily parts of my skin have absolutely no makeup left on them, resulting in patchy gross face. No one likes a patchy gross face!

I transferred the contents into another empty setting spray bottle I had, so it’s not going to waste. I guess I’ll just use it until my USA purchases arrive with other setting sprays I want to try. Guess you never know until you try it!

Have you tried this setting spray? Does it work for you?

Making your make-up last longer

It’s a girls dream to come home after a hard day of working looking the same as when she left. I usually get the response of ‘you look tired‘, gee thanks love. I’m going to admit, I’m onto only the fourth different ‘setting spray’ since wearing make-up properly for 7 years. Prior to knowing anything about make-up, I used to use hairspray to make sure my make-up didn’t move all day/night. OMG I KNOW OK.

For 6 years consistently I used MAC’s Fix+. I think it’s a great product but I wanted to see what else was out there. Plus I was slightly sick of selling bits of my kidney every time I went to buy a bottle (I think it’s expensive). So on an adventure I went..

I used Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater for awhile. Even to the point of purchasing a second bottle (each bottle lasting probably about 3-4 months depending on how much you spray). I liked that it was made from natural ingredients, smelt lovely and hydrated my face. Yet I did find it made me oily within a few hours. I kept using it in a hope it would change or I’d just get used to it. Nope! So it’s become a night time spray to hydrate my skin after a mask, before moisturiser. I’ll finish the bottle but won’t repurchase.

Then briefly for a week I tried NYX Matte Finish. Ugh, couldn’t give the bottle away fast enough. You can read my proper review here.

e.l.f. setThen while out shopping with my BFF I came across e.l.f. finally at Kmart. Not all Kmart’s stock this brand, but a lot of girls love the cheap cosmetics. I did some grabby-hands at the stand and chose their Studio Makeup Mist & Set. It’s a small bottle, 60ml, yet I’ve found the spray that comes from the nozzle is larger than other spray bottles I’ve used. Therefore I only need 2 sprays for my entire face! It boasts Aloe, Green Tea, Cucumber and Vitamins A, C & E. It doesn’t have much of a smell, as whenever I try to smell it the scent disappears. It dries quickly which is a super plus and doesn’t feel like I have a layer of something on my face. When I’ve gone to remove my make-up at night I’ve noticed that ALL yes ALL of my foundation and powder is still on my face. I’m super impressed that a little $8 bottle of goodness works this well! Especially since I’m the worst at not touching my face throughout the day, a habit I need to break. I’ve found when I use my MAC Studio Fix Powder that I have to reapply powder half-way throughout the day. Doesn’t bother me that much, but when I matched it with my newly purchased Rimmel ‘Stay Matte’ powder (review coming soon) it stayed on my face AND MATTE ALL DAY. I didn’t have to retouch and I ran around at work, got sweaty and still had a full face of make-up when I got home.

I’m going to say that I think it depends on the foundations you use to how your setting spray works. I doubt every setting spray in the world works with every foundation and if there is such a product GIMME GIMME! Me being me, I have to try others, so here’s my ‘to try’ list I’ve compiled –

I realise 2 of those I’ve listed you can only purchase from the US or fork out an entire kidney to buy from a stockist in Australia. However I love my friends, oh so much, especially the ones that are visiting the US this year! 😀

Do you set your make-up? Or do you prefer the powder look?
